The Shiseido Global Innovation Center launched fibona, its open innovation program, in 2019.
It is constantly evolving, led by the concepts of “Unprecedented, Co-creation, and Incomplete”.
At fibona lab, we leverage Shiseido's extensive research expertise,
cultivated over more than 100 years, to develop products
by integrating innovative technologies from startups and unique ideas from consumers.
Additionally, we are fostering a “co-creation community" where consumers and researchers collaborate as equals,
conducting experiments and engaging in ongoing dialogue.
We aim to continuously develop unfinished innovative beauty products
that are unlike anything currently available,

Taking care of "Stress Odor" Emitted from the Skin: The Story Behind the Creation of "Stress G Harmonizer"
2025.08.29
As a beauty product developed by Shiseido’s open innovation program “fibona,” the mist “Stress G Harmonizer” (product name: Shiseido Fibona 03-160) has been newly launched to care for “stress odor” emitted from the entire body due to stress from tension. What is “stress odor” as revealed by Shiseido’s skin gas research? How does the “Harmonage Fragrance” enable care through the harmony of scents, and what is the new way of self-maintenance that “turns tension into an ally?” We spoke with three project members: Masako Katsuyama, a researcher of “stress odor,” Daiki Fujimaki, who was in charge of product information design and communication, and Senko Negishi, who designed the usage method. “Emotional Fluctuations” Become Your Own Scent — What were your roles in this product development? Fujimaki: I was responsible for developing the information to convey the appeal of the product “Stress G Harmonizer” and how to communicate it to customers.
A New Habit of ‘Washing with Serum.’ Changing the Value of Morning Face Washing: The Making of fibona’s 'Cleansing Serum’
2025.08.07
Shiseido Research Institute’s open innovation program, fibona, launched a new “wash-type beauty serum” called “Cleansing Serum” in April 2025 as a co-created beauty product that did not exist before. The idea that “washing connects to skin moisture” gave birth to this cleansing serum, which rewrites the concept of morning face washing. Why was the idea and technology of “washing your face with a beauty serum in the morning” born? How was the change in skin condition through morning face washing demonstrated? And what new habit beyond cleansing do the researchers aim for with this product? We interviewed three researchers involved in the project: Ruriko Ito, who handled value development; Ai Ito, who was responsible for base material development; and Takuto Kanaya, who was in charge of efficacy verification. Is Water Washing Enough? To Change the Value of Morning Face Washing — Please tell us about your roles in the “Cleansing Serum” project. Ruriko Ito: I was in charge of value development, designing the product direction of the “Cleansing Serum.” My work involved planning how to express and communicate the product’s value and message from the user’s perspective. I also selected the components for the moisturizing veil formed by the serum, aligning them with the concept.
Shiseido Research Institute's "fibona" Collaborates to Create Beauty Products "Skin Accessories™" Available in Limited Quantities
2025.07.18
Shiseido Research Institute’s open innovation program “fibona” (*1), which aims to co-create “what does not yet exist” in beauty products, will launch “Skin Accessories™” on July 21, 2025 (Monday). These products utilize the “Second Skin” technology, which forms artificial skin on the surface to integrate with the skin and correct unevenness. They will be available in limited quantities at two stores: Matsumoto Kiyoshi Shibuya Dogenzaka Flag and @cosme Tokyo. Matsumoto Kiyoshi Shibuya Dogenzaka Flag will host a pop-up event from July 21 (Monday) to July 31 (Thursday), while @cosme Tokyo will feature a special exhibition in its entrance space from July 30 (Wednesday) to August 5 (Tuesday).
